Buttery Soft Pretzels

We love the pretzels in the mall! Wetzel's Pretzels, Auntie Ann's, I'm sure there are others.

You know those warm, soft, dipped in butter pretzels. They melt in your mouth, just the right amount of salt.

And sooooooo soft.

And I love finding recipes on the internet.
Just type in what you want, what you are craving, and you'll probably find someone has already done it and SHARED the recipe! Thanks to all who do!

We never go to the mall, and even if we did, pretzels from the mall for 5? Do you know how much that costs? I can think of better things to spend the of money on.

So again, I love the internet and all the recipes everyone shares.

I found this recipe at allrecipes.com

Buttery Soft Pretzels.
Thank you Christa Rose for sharing.

I read the reviews, was definitely a thumbs up.

And easy ingredients, no special flour or weird ingredients needed, I have everything we need.

Buttery Soft Pretzels

4 teaspoons active dry yeast  12.8 g
1 teaspoon white sugar      8.3 g
1 1/4 cups warm water (110 degrees F.)  43 degrees C.
5 cups all-purpose flour       600 g
1/2 cup white sugar          100 g
1 1/2 teaspoon salt          9 g
1 tablespoon vegetable oil        15 mL

1/2 cup baking soda           103 g
4 cups hot water           946 mL
1/4 cup kosher salt, for topping          60 g
2 tablespoons melted butter             30 g
toppings

In small bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar in warm water.

Let stand until creamy and foamy, about 10 minutes.

In a large bowl, mix together flour, 1/2 cup sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center, add the oil and the yeast mixture.

Mix and form into a dough. If the mixture is dry, add one or two tablespoons of water. Knead the dough until smooth, about 7-8 minutes.

Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 450 F. In a large bowl, dissolve baking soda in hot water. This is really fun for the kids to watch, it will bubble up like a volcano!

When risen, turn dough out onto lightly floured surface and divide into 12 equal pieces. We put the plastic wrap over the dough not being used to keep it moist.

Roll each piece into a rope and twist into a pretzel shape. We just make sticks, about the length of my finger. Much easier for the kids to make. Pretzel fingers? hmmmm....

Once all the dough is shaped, combine your baking soda to your hot water to create a bath for your pretzels. Dip each pretzel into the bath and place on a greased baking sheet. Sprinkle with kosher salt. We didn't have kosher salt but we do have a salt grinder and it was perfect for these.

Go light on the salt, trust me.

Bake in preheated oven for 8 minutes, until browned.

Now for the good stuff. Immediately after removing from oven, brush tops of pretzels with melted butter.

We also left the salt off some of the pretzels and on those pretzels we rolled them in toppings.

Let your tastebuds go wild.

Better than the mall....

Just buttered

Sour cream and onion (hubby's favorite)

Cinnamon sugar

These are a winner in my house every time!

I didn't even think about a chocolate covered pretzel.....maybe next time!

  8. Just found this recipe, and made them with whole wheat flour. Came out delicious! I did some with salt, some cinnamon and sugar, and then my fave: with garlic salt. So good!

  9. Those pretzels from the mall are so good, but man are they pricey. What a fun idea to make your own...it has been on my bucket list for the past few years!!!

    1. Jocelyn, watch out, these are addictive. I never get to make them anymore though. Anytime these come up, the kids fight over who's going to make them (including my son!)
