Ice Cream Sundaes in a Jar

These are so fun to eat. And if you're having....say...a birthday party at your house, it's nice to have the ice cream already handled.

I hate scooping up ice cream and plopping it on to the plate next to the cake for parties. The ice cream is too hard or if you've let it soften up, it starts getting all melty and messy. And who wants ice cream, who doesn't.

You can buy those little ice cream cups at the store but they're expensive and so little, I'd need 3 or 4 of them myself.

So thinking about my daughter's party and wanting to have to do as little work the day of as possible, I got to thinking about the ice cream. This will be teenagers I'm dealing with. They can feed themselves. It's a sleep over, they'll be eating all night. I like the idea of grab and go.

I'll make my own ice cream cups, in my mason jars. But that's so boring. They need more than just ice cream. And I have all this stuff I can add in as layers.

Sundaes in a Jar

Ice cream
Toppings such as
    crushed cookies
    chopped candy bars
    Hot Fudge sauce-cooled
    Caramel sauce
    Nuts
    Whipped cream

the possibilities are endless.

This is a little time consuming to make. You're doing layers and after each layer you need to refreeze your jars.

Start with softened ice cream, almost melty. Scoop it out into a large bowl and play with it, like when you were a kid, stirring around and around.

Spoon into bottom of jars and freeze. You want your ice cream solid again before adding next layer.

Then do a layer of topping, push down with spoon and freeze.

Layer more ice cream, freeze.

then one last topping.

Freeze.

I made all sorts of different combinations. In large jars, small jars, chocolate ice cream and vanilla ice cream.

I used up left over candy and cookies.

These were a hit! And I didn't have to do anything but load the dishwasher when it was over.

  1. Joan, SUCH a great idea! Yes, it can be a pain scooping out all of that ice cream at a party - my hand starts to hurt! I have to get me some mason jars. They're so good for so many things.
    Have a wonderful weekend! xoxo

  2. This is such a great idea! There are so many possibilities with the layering of flavors too. The ice cream part of the party is the worst!
