I have to confess something.
It's time I came out of the closet (or pantry in this case.)
I don't make everything from scratch.
There I said it.
I always have a box of this stuff in my cabinet.
Bisquick.
I can make biscuits from scratch. And I can make some awesome pancakes from scratch when I feel like it. But when I'm in a hurry, I pull this stuff out.
The other day I was looking for a recipe for something, I don't even remember what, and I came across this recipe.
Nutty Toffee Bars
adapted from Betty Crocker
1/2 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 cups Bisquick
3/4 cup chocolate chips
1/4 cup coconut
1/2 cup chopped nuts (I used pecans)
Combine butter and brown sugar, mixing until creamy and smooth.
Add Bisquick until well blended.
Press dough into a greased 8 x8 or 9 x 13 pan.
(I used a 8 x8 like the recipe recommends but next time I'll use the 9 x 13 for a thinner crust.) Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 25-35 minutes, until golden brown.
Immediately after removing from oven, spread chocolate chips over top of crust and let sit for 2-3 minutes.
Then, using the back of a spoon, spread chocolate to cover evenly.
Sprinkle coconut and nuts over top and gently press in to secure.
Let cool completely before cutting.
These bars were pretty good. Not from scratch but fast and easy. And I'm not telling anyone else they were made using Bisquick. It'll be our little secret.

There's nothing wrong with using shortcuts now and then. Especially if they make something this delicious! Can't wait to try it.
ReplyDeleteI love Bisquick. I grew up on the stuff. I always have cake and brownie mix in my pantry. I love cooking from scratch, but hey, sometimes a cake mix is the way to go (and sometimes it tastes better too!) These bars look scrumptious!
ReplyDeleteBisquick is awesome, so many things you can do with it. I often make "semi homemade" tasty treats. Only when I have actual time to myself, can I make something from scratch..lol Love this recipe, thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely a Bisquick fan too. How could you possibly go wrong making these luscious puppies?! I have a similar recipe that uses crescent rolls for the crust. It's all good! Glad you shared!
ReplyDeleteThis looks delicious, and similar to something that my mother-in-law makes. Can you believe I've never actually baked with Bisquik?! I hear that it's so great to bake with and you can use it in so many things, so I'll have to try sometime! Your recipe looks great!
ReplyDeleteYour Nutty Toffee Bars couldn't look more perfect!

ReplyDeleteI don't know what bisquik is, does it basically make shortbread on the base? Those definitely look tasty :)
ReplyDeleteJoan,
ReplyDeleteHow funny I make a Turtle Bar that's pretty much the same as this, but I just use regular flour!! I actually posted it and then it was picked as a SRC recipe this month. Turns out EVERYBODY loves this dessert and it's way easy. Here's my recipe...
